The Evolution of the Porsche Logo: From 1952 to Today

Few automotive emblems carry the weight of the Porsche logo. For over seven decades, this crest has symbolized precision engineering, motorsport dominance, and an unwavering commitment to performance. At Champion Porsche, we see this emblem every day—on the steering wheels, hoods, and hubcaps of the vehicles that pass through our service bays. But how did this iconic design come to be?

The Birth of an Icon (1952)

The Porsche logo wasn’t created in a boardroom. It emerged from a competition launched in 1951 by Stuttgart art collector Ottomar Domnick, offering 1,000 German marks for the winning design. None of the submissions quite captured what Ferry Porsche envisioned.

The breakthrough came from Franz Xaver ReimspieĂź, a talented draftsman who had previously designed the Volkswagen logo. In early 1952, he sketched the first version of the crest that would define the brand. By December 1952, it appeared on steering wheels. By 1954, it graced the hood handle of the 356 Speedster.

The Elements Behind the Design

The Porsche logo is a masterclass in regional identity:

  • The Horse: Taken from Stuttgart’s city seal, referencing the area’s horse breeding history (“stud garden”)
  • Black and Red: Colors from the WĂĽrttemberg-Hohenzollern crest
  • Deer Antlers: Another nod to WĂĽrttemberg heritage
  • Stuttgart Name: Anchoring the brand to its Swabian roots

Every element tells a story of where these cars are built.

Seven Decades of Refinement

The 2023 Redesign: Modern Meets Heritage

The latest evolution, introduced for Porsche’s 75th anniversary, represents the most careful refinement in the logo’s history. Style Porsche spent three years perfecting every detail:

  • Brushed precious metal replaces polished surfaces
  • Three-dimensional honeycomb structure adds depth
  • Refreshed crest animal with more nuanced rendering
  • Subtler gold tone for contemporary elegance

“The time factor is very important,” explains Joachim Paetzel, Specialist for Colour and Trim at Style Porsche. “A trademark is not designed ‘off the cuff.’ You have to return to it again and again until it achieves a harmonious, natural effect.”

The result? A logo that reads clearly in both physical form on vehicles and digital applications across screens.

Why This Matters for Your Porsche

The Porsche logo evolution mirrors the vehicles themselves: respectful of heritage, relentlessly refined. When you bring your 911, Cayenne, Macan, Panamera, or Taycan to Champion Porsche, you’re entrusting it to technicians who understand this philosophy.

Every crest on every hood represents:

  • 75+ years of engineering evolution
  • A connection to Stuttgart’s manufacturing heritage
  • A promise of performance and precision

Whether your Porsche wears a classic crest from the 1990s or the modernized 2023 version, it carries the same DNA.

Preserving the Legacy

Through Porsche Classic, every historical crest remains available for restoration projects. These aren’t reproductions—they’re manufactured using original drawings and specialized tooling, some requiring elaborate production processes to match factory specifications.
